Cleaner oceans, more sustainable design

We are part of the SEAQUAL INITIATIVE

At RIM, we are constantly looking for ways to reduce the environmental impact of our products – from refining production processes to carefully selecting sustainable materials. One of the specific steps we have taken is the inclusion of upholstery fabrics made from recycled sources, including those that contain SEAQUAL® YARN – a material made from plastic waste recovered from the ocean.

The problem is alarming:

📉 More than 14 million tons of plastic end up in the ocean every year, with 92% being macroplastics that gradually break down into microplastics.

🧬 These microplastics enter the food chain – including ours. Scientific studies show that each of us unknowingly ingests the equivalent of up to 50 credit cards worth of plastic annually.

🌊 94% of plastic sinks to the ocean floor, threatening biodiversity and the long-term health of marine ecosystems.

SEAQUAL INITIATIVE

The SEAQUAL INITIATIVE is a global movement that connects manufacturers, brands, and non-profit organisations to fight ocean pollution and support the circular economy. Its mission is to prevent plastic waste from becoming a permanent burden by transforming it into valuable new materials. The initiative focuses on recovering plastic waste from the ocean before it breaks down into microplastics, and turning it into high-quality textile fibres.

At RIM, we support this effort by offering upholstery fabrics from British manufacturer Camira that contain SEAQUAL® YARN:

  • 3D Knit – an innovative fabric shaped precisely to the form of the chair’s backrest, resulting in virtually zero production waste. It contains SEAQUAL® YARN and is available in three colours for the Space premium office chair models.
  • Oceanic – a fabric designed with a focus on circular design. It contains plastic waste recovered from the oceans and turned into high-quality fibres. For every 2 kg of Oceanic fabric sold (approx. 4 metres), 1 kg of waste is removed from the ocean. Oceanic combines durability, softness, and visual appeal. At RIM, we offer it in eight colour options, available across our entire product portfolio.

By choosing these materials, you support the transformation of ocean waste into meaningful resources – and bring sustainability into practice.
